Army Life in a Black Regiment by Thomas Wentworth Higginson

Army Life in a Black Regiment by Thomas Wentworth Higginson

    by

    Since Dec 20, 2021 00:00 UTC

These pages record some of the adventures of the First South Carolina Volunteers, the first slave regiment mustered into the service of the United States during the late civil war. It was, indeed, the first colored regiment of any kind so mustered, except a portion of the troops raised by Major-General Butler at New Orleans. These scarcely belonged to the same class, however, being recruited from the free colored population of that city, a comparatively self-reliant and educated race. A Child’s History of England by Charles Dickens

    by

    Since Nov 27, 2023 00:00 UTC

A Child’s History of England first appeared in serial form, running from January 25, 1851 to December 10, 1853 and was first published in three volume book form in 1852, 1853, and 1854. Dickens dedicated the book to “My own dear children, whom I hope it may help, bye and bye, to read with interest larger and better books on the same subject”. The history covered the period between 50 BC and 1689, ending with a chapter summarising events from then until the ascension of Queen Victoria.

For Christians, spiritual growth depends on a healthy diet that includes both the milk and meat of God’s Word. But before we can savor large portions of sound doctrine, we need to be able to digest the basics of biblical truth. Whether you are a pastor, Sunday school teacher, or parent, helping others enjoy the “solid food” of Scripture is one of the most important components of discipleship. Released each weekday, this podcast can help Christians, families, and churches enjoy the rich doctrines of Scripture and pursue our chief end to glorify and enjoy God forever.

Origins of The Cold War – for iPod/iPhone

Origins of The Cold War – for iPod/iPhone

    by

    Since Oct 8, 2013 07:12 UTC

How was The Cold War fought? What types of evidence do historians use to understand the events that took place? The Cold War was a state of political and military tension between the USA and the Soviet Union, along with their respective allies in the Western and Eastern Blocs. As The Cold War was ‘fought’ in so many different ways, it gives historians the opportunity to discuss the many ways that you can study the time period. This audio collection looks at how Cold War historians combine traditional sources with other forms of social and cultural history to build an overall view of this conflict. This material forms part of the Open University course ‘A327 Europe 1914-1989 War, Peace Modernity’

    Origin Stories

    Origin Stories

    by

    Since Apr 15, 2022 22:29 UTC

Titled “Origin Stories,” this podcast series aims to build transdisciplinary spaces in which to rethink educational practices in order to redress pervasive ideological and methodological biases in Japanese Studies. In this space scholars will discuss their personal background, intellectual formation, experiences in the field, and evolving perspective on Japanese Studies. In this series, we hope to explore the following questions: How can we employ a black feminist framework to unpack the historical forces contributing to the particular racial formations that have congealed within Japanese cultures since the late medieval period, and within postwar Japanese Studies in its deep debt to U.S. imperialism and white supremacy? How have legacies of racism and anti-blackness in the academy hindered scholars of color in their work in Japanese Studies? What new insights can be mined when marginalized members of academia gather to critically consider anti-racist curricula and policies as they reimagine the humanities? For more details, visit our Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy website: https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/jsap/podcast/

Myth at the heart of the Roman Empire – for iPad/Mac/PC

Myth at the heart of the Roman Empire – for iPad/Mac/PC

    by

    Since Aug 17, 2010 13:31 UTC

How and why did ancient Romans use myth to validate their power? Emperor Augustus legitimised his rule by entwining his own ancestry with the mythical stories of Rome’s foundation, and created a divine aura around Rome as capital of the vast empire. This album visits key emblems associated with Rome’s beginnings: the Forum and the Capitoline Hill with its statue of the she-wolf and Romulus and Remus; the Emperor Augustus’s palace and ceremonial altar, and the 17th Century D’Arpino frescos of foundation myths commissioned by Pope Innocent X to underpin his authority. By monumentalising and glorifying their real and legendary past, Romans painted their own history and this continues to encapsulate Roman identity today. This material forms part of The Open University course A330 Myth in the Greek and Roman worlds.
