    The Corsets and Codpieces Podcast

A look at the differences between men’s and women’s clothes using fashion history. Why are men’s and women’s clothes different? Any piece of clothing is just cloth until we, as humans, assign meaning to it. These meanings are fluid and changing all the time. Things that seem so concrete now, weren’t always that way. I want to dive deep and see why we have these meanings and deconstruct them. Knowing where these meanings come from can allow each person to decide for themselves if the meanings hold value for them, hopefully allowing more freedom in dress.

Origins of The Cold War – for iPod/iPhone

    by

    Since Oct 8, 2013 07:12 UTC

How was The Cold War fought? What types of evidence do historians use to understand the events that took place? The Cold War was a state of political and military tension between the USA and the Soviet Union, along with their respective allies in the Western and Eastern Blocs. As The Cold War was ‘fought’ in so many different ways, it gives historians the opportunity to discuss the many ways that you can study the time period. This audio collection looks at how Cold War historians combine traditional sources with other forms of social and cultural history to build an overall view of this conflict. This material forms part of the Open University course ‘A327 Europe 1914-1989 War, Peace Modernity’

    Debriefing the Briefing

    Debriefing the Briefing

    by

    Since Sep 21, 2023 07:01 UTC

Amid the nuclear threat of the Cold War, America’s prized secrets were falling into the hands of its sworn enemy. The FBI’s hunt for the leak led to an astonishing discovery—the mole was one of its own, special agent Robert Hanssen. For two decades, Hanssen masqueraded as a devoted patriot while ruthlessly selling out his country, trading classified intelligence to the Soviet Union and later Russia, in exchange for cash and diamonds. He was a whirlwind of contradictions—a self-proclaimed patriot and a traitor; a family man who sexually betrayed his wife; an ardent man of God and a sinner. Through interviews with Hanssen’s family, friends, and colleagues, CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent Major Garrett (Host of “The Takeout”) delves into the double life of Robert Hanssen and unravels the chilling truth about the most damaging spy in FBI history in “Agent of Betrayal: The Double Life of Robert Hanssen”.

A Handy Guide for Beggars, Especially Those of the Poetic Fraternity

    by

    Since Feb 27, 2009 05:51 UTC

“Being sundry explorations, made while afoot and penniless in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. These adventures convey and illustrate the rules of beggary for poets and some others.” Published in 1919, this is poet Vachel Lindsay’s description of his travels “afoot and penniless” across the southern and eastern United States, staying with strangers, reciting or trading poetry for dinner, and along the way, describing in stories and poetry, mostly stories, the people and places he encountered. Think “Travels With Charlie,” minus the dog and the Winnebago, and much, much earlier. From the Dedication and Preface: “There are one hundred new poets in the villages of the land. This Handy Guide is dedicated to the younger sons of the wid earth, to the runnaway boys and girls getting further from home every hour, to the prodigals still wasting their substance in riotous living, be they gamblers or blasphemers or plain drunks; to the heretics of whatever school to whom life is a rebellion with banners; to those who are willing to accept counsel if it be mad counsel.” If you remember the 1960’s, you’ll feel right at home. If you wish you remembered the 1890’s, here’s your chance. You might also feel right at home, at that.

    by

    Since Sep 22, 2017 04:59 UTC

Not Her Again is the movie podcast where we look at those Oscar years where Meryl Streep was nominated for an Oscar… but went home emptyhanded. All 17 of them (and counting? Probably? Who knows?). Looking at Meryl’s record number of losses will take us from Hollywood in the late ’70s to today, and we’ll see how things have changed, how things haven’t, who should have won, what films were overlooked or overpraised, and why this woman’s attendance is damn near perfect when she loses 85 percent of the time.

Little Lord Fauntleroy by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Little Lord Fauntleroy by Frances Hodgson Burnett

    by

    Since Dec 19, 2019 00:00 UTC

In mid-1880s Brooklyn, New York, Cedric Errol lives with his Mother (never named, known only as Mrs Errol or “dearest”) in genteel poverty after his Father Captain Errol dies. They receive a visit from Havisham, an English lawyer with a message from Cedric’s grandfather, Lord Dorincourt. Cedric is now Lord Fauntleroy and heir to the Earldom and a vast estate. The Earl wants Cedric to live with him and learn to be an English aristocrat. He offers Mrs Errol a house and income but refuses to meet or have anything to do with her. The crusty Earl is impressed by the appearance and intelligence of his young American grandson, and charmed by his innocent nature. He admits that Cedric, who has befriended and cared for the poor and needy on the Earl’s estate, will be a better Earl than he was. A pretender to Cedric’s inheritance appears, but the claim is investigated and disproved with the assistance of Cedric’s loyal American friends. The Earl is reconciled to his son’s American widow. The Earl had intended to teach his grandson how to be an aristocrat; however, Cedric inadvertently teaches his grand-father that an aristocrat should practice compassion and social justice towards persons who are dependent on him. The Earl becomes the kind and good man Cedric always innocently believed him to be. Cedric is reunited with his mother, who comes to live in the ancestral castle with them. “Little Lord Fauntleroy” is the first children’s novel written by English–American playwright and author Frances Hodgson Burnett. 9/12

    9/12

    by

    Since Aug 31, 2021 18:52 UTC

How did 9/11 the day become 9/11 the idea? That question drives Pineapple Street Studios and award-winning host Dan Taberski (Missing Richard Simmons, Running From COPS, The Line) to shift the focus to what happened on 9/12, and every day after that. 9/12 is a poignant, surprising, and surprisingly funny seven episode series about people who wake up on 9/12 having to navigate a new, radically altered world. A teenager gets caught up in an out-of-control conspiracy theory that he helped start. A Pakistani business owner finds hundreds of his Brooklyn neighbors are disappearing. Joke-writers at The Onion must figure out just how soon is “too soon”? 9/12 asks what it all means. We know what happened on 9/11. But what happened on 9/12 to alter our memory and our perspective forever?

The series 9/12 earned three Podcast Academy Awards at the 2022 Ambies, including Podcast of the Year.

In 1979 a conference was held in Toronto which became a pivotal event for both Toronto and Canada’s lesbian community. While so much attention at the time was focused around the emerging visibility of Canada’s gay community, it was heavily gendered, focsuing almost exclusively on gay men, much less visilbity existed for Candaa’s lesbian community. The 1979 conference was thus a key moment in helping bring visibility to Canada’s lesbian community while also acting as a rally point for the community itself. To cover this fascinating topic we are talking with Rebecka Taves Sheffield, an archivist, author, and educator based in Hamilton, Ontario.

Rebecka was the first Executive Director and Archives Manager of the ArQuives (formerly the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives), an organization that is the inspiration for much of her scholarly work. She trained as an archivist at the University of Toronto (UofT) iSchool and earned a PhD at UofT’s Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies. Rebecka has served as a senior policy advisor for the Archives of Ontario and is now advising on digital and data policy with Ontario Digital Service.

She is the author of Documenting Rebellions: A Study of Four Lesbian and Gay Archives in Queer Times (Litwin, 2020), and was part of the award-winning editorial team that produced Any Other Way: How Toronto Got Queer(Coach House, 2017). Her work has been published in Archivaria, American Archivist, Radical History Review, Library Trends, Papers/Cahiers, and the International Journal of Information, Diversity & Inclusion.
