The Clicking of Cuthbert by P. G. Wodehouse

The Clicking of Cuthbert by P. G. Wodehouse

    by

    Since Dec 23, 2023 00:00 UTC

The first of two books that he wrote on golfing themes, The Clicking of Cuthbert by PG Wodehouse sparkles with typical Wodehousian wit, humor and general goofiness! An avid golfer himself, Wodehouse published the ten stories in this volume in 1922. In 1924, an American edition titled Golf Without Tears was published. Since then it has enjoyed undimmed popularity among both Wodehouse fans and golfing enthusiasts. Nine of the stories contained in this book are narrated by the Oldest Member, a character who has become a cult figure among Wodehouse fans. He is a nameless character who is perennially seated on the terrace of a nameless golf club somewhere in England. An Ancient Mariner-like figure, the Oldest Member is ever eager to engage others in conversation and relate a pithy story from his boundless experience. Every story is a gem and peppered with memorably funny characters. What is so delightful about The Clicking of Cuthbert is that you don’t really need to be a golfer to appreciate these stories. Of course they are liberally sprinkled with technical terms, but for the uninitiated reader, this is a great opportunity to get familiar with this very popular sport. Terms and jargon may have altered a little since the book was published, but nothing distracts from the humor and hilarity! Three of the stories have been adapted to film and many of them were published in different journals like the Saturday Evening Post, The Strand Magazine and Collier’s. Most of the stories concern sentimental dilemmas that the hero/heroine are embroiled in. The tales are couched in some of the most entertaining and enjoyable turns of phrase ever to be found in the English language and you’ll often find yourself bursting out aloud into laughter as you read – and continuing to smile long after you’ve put the book down! Fun for the entire family!

My Man Jeeves by P. G. Wodehouse

My Man Jeeves by P. G. Wodehouse

    by

    Since Dec 26, 2023 00:00 UTC

First published in 1919, My Man Jeeves is a collection of short stories featuring the well known fictional characters Jeeves and Bertie Wooster. The compilation consists of eight stories, of which four feature the popular duo while the other four stories feature Reggie Pepper, an early model of Bertie Wooster. Set in the early 20th century, the stories carry much humor, wit, and charming mischief as the characters seem to attract trouble wherever they go. Wodehouse sets the stories in the early 20th century and allows the audience to enter the world of the upper-class establishments, and experience the many awkward situations the characters find themselves in. A satirical portrayal of characters and events, the stories see the presence of a rich young Englishman Bertie Wooster, who resides in New York, and leads a comfortable lifestyle. He is additionally accompanied by his suave valet Jeeves, whose positive influence is known to swiftly rescue his employer from discomfort. The collection begins with a story that introduces the all-knowing Jeeves, who is described as being the brains of the party, and the daft yet charming Wooster who appears to be a magnet for misfortune. Together the pair must outwit acquaintances by devising schemes, though they repeatedly neglect calculating possible outcomes, and as a result further entangle themselves in their own web. The other stories featuring the inseparable duo all seem to center around certain predicaments that require Jeeves’ quick wits and sage solutions, and subsequently follow him as he gives spot-on advice on various distinct topics ranging from fashion, finance and horse betting. Furthermore, four stories observe Reggie Pepper, who is also an idle young socialite and victim to endless troublesome situations. He too must come up with respectable solutions to spare him from embarrassment. The style, witty dialogue, absurd situations, and memorable characters are just some of the aspects that mark the collection as a humorous treasure. Poking fun at the socialite lifestyle, while weaving together a series of humorous misadventures, Wodehouse successfully creates a light-hearted piece guaranteed to steal a smile. A timeless compilation of humor and wit, My Man Jeeves will leave readers coming back to its riveting pages time and time again.

    The Casebook of D.I. Snaith

    The Casebook of D.I. Snaith

    Since Feb 24, 2010 22:42 UTC

The first compilation of the adventures of England’s most peerless pig, Detective Inspector Snaith. Cracking crime in a Britain just a few years in the future Snaith works alongside his colleagues the body-dismorphic-disordered D.I. Wilton, the surgically pixillated D.I. Harris and their boss-stroke-guvnor, the Gaffer. In spite of a crippling addiction to cocktails, and the most machiavellian of ex wives Snaith always gets results. Whatever it takes and by any means necessary. He may be a bad man… but he’s a damn good copper. Hard boiled, humorous, and just a little surreal.

IntroVETS is a veterinary podcast by introverts with high-functioning anxiety. The show was conceptualized in 2019 and launched in 2020 by co-hosts Lauren and JJ. Lauren, a veterinarian, and Jennifer, a Licensed Veterinary Technician in the state of Alabama, have over 40 years of combined experience in the veterinary field. The podcast presents veterinary case studies in a fun and relatable way, along with various sidebars, interesting facts, and new research. The hosts talk frankly about anxiety and other mental health concerns, going to therapy, and related topics. There is (hopefully) a strong humor element, as well as some philosophizing and opinion sharing. There is also the occasional moderately naughty word, but we try to not use the big guns. It’s not really a formal environment – it’s more of a veterinary hang, and we’d love to see you there!

    Letter from China

    Letter from China

    by

    Since Jul 24, 2008 13:53 UTC

This is a poignant and irreverent diary of the author’s yearlong (2001-2) experience of teaching English to college students in Beijing, People’s Republic of China. From the very first pages, the author draws you into his struggle with a culture worlds away from his comfort zone. The author’s generous and compelling personality allowed him to gain access to the lives of his students and their families, who became characters in his tale. One can experience the author’s wit and humanity throughout the narrative. The author’s humorous view of China is especially timely and dovetails with the current explosion of interest in that country as it enters the modern world. The book is neither a travelogue nor a look at the government, although elements of those subjects are woven into the story. Instead, it is an engaging look at China, tailored toward those who know little about it. Still, those who have lived and/or traveled there will also enjoy the book as it reminds them of the absurdities they, too, experienced.

1601: Conversation, as it was by the Social Fireside, in the Time of the Tudors by Mark Twain

1601: Conversation, as it was by the Social Fireside, in the Time of the Tudors by Mark Twain

    by

    Since Dec 31, 2020 00:00 UTC

An atypical piece of writing by Mark Twain, the short bawdy skit documents a conversion between Queen Elizabeth and several notable writers of the time, including Sir Walter Raleigh, Francis Beaumont, Ben Jonson, and William Shakespeare. Despite first being published in 1880, the piece remained anonymous for a period of time, until it was later acknowledged by Twain in 1901 as his own. Comprised of humor, descriptive imagery, ribald connotations, and vulgar language, the faux conversation is simultaneously humorous and repulsing, but nonetheless a wonder for its satirical precision. Written as a fictitious dialogue between Queen Elizabeth and her guest luminaries at court, the short story is accounted in a diary entry by one of her disgusted cup-bearers who observe the scandalous conversation of scatological nature. The conversation is instigated by a thunderous and foul reeking fart as the group begins to discuss its features and origin. Each individual subsequently comments on the issue and their experiences with flatulence. The conversation then takes a different direction as the topic of sex is introduced, and the individuals discuss various customs and rumors they have heard, including sexual appetite, physical features, and shocking sexual exploits. Furthermore, the issue of poetry and religion are put forward, with Shakespeare beginning to read poetry, hence prompting the characters to discuss poets, their work and ingenuity. The narrator continues to effectively record each shocking assertion as the conversation heatedly progresses. The short piece allows the audience to witness a completely different side to Mark Twain, as he criticizes literary figures and their works through his fantastic instance of potty humor. Entertaining and humorous throughout its short but rich content, the piece is a jewel considering its characters, historical context and the lewd imperceptible style employed by the great Mark Twain. Brain Twister by Mark Phillips (Randall Garrett and Laurence M. Janifer)

Brain Twister by Mark Phillips (Randall Garrett and Laurence M. Janifer)

    by

    Since Dec 25, 2023 00:00 UTC

“Mark Phillips” is, or are, two writers: Randall Garrett and Laurence M. Janifer. Their joint pen-name, derived from their middle names (Philip and Mark), was coined soon after their original meeting, at a science-fiction convention. Both men were drunk at the time, which explains a good deal, and only one has ever sobered up. A matter for constant contention between the collaborators is which one. Originally published as That Sweet Little Old Lady, Brain Twister follows the adventures of FBI agent Kenneth J. Malone as he attempts to unravel the machinations of a telepathic spy. His first problem: how do you find a telepath to catch the first telepath? The novella was nominated for the Hugo Award in 1960.
