Comic History of the United States by Bill Nye

Comic History of the United States by Bill Nye

    by

    Since Oct 2, 2020 00:00 UTC

For American journalist and humorist Edgar Wilson Nye who wrote under the pen name Bill Nye in the late 19th century, facts are not to be presented in their newborn, bare state. They should be properly draped and embellished before they can be presented before the public. Hence, in the Comic History of the United States published in 1894, he gives his readers the facts. But in a bid to make the historical figures more human he describes them as “people who ate and possibly drank, people who were born, flourished and died, not grave tragedians posing perpetually for their photographs.” Nye was educated in rural Wisconsin and moved to Wyoming to study law. His light-hearted, flippant takes on the serious questions of the day became extremely popular and he moved into journalism. Later, he established his own newspaper, the Laramie Boomerang. Beginning with the discovery of America, a chapter in which he describes Queen Isabella and her advocacy of Christopher Columbus’ famous voyage in lighter vein, Bill Nye takes a tongue in cheek look at Balboa, Cortez and the discovery of moonshine whiskey. He further delves into such serious matters as the Drawbacks of Being a Colonist, The Personality of Washington, The Dutch at New Amsterdam, The American Civil War and its alleged causes and the final Reconstruction by Johnson and Grant. Nye maintains his sly humor and irreverence for honored figures like Stonewall Jackson, Generals Lee, Grant and Sherman, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and others. Bill Nye’s technique of taking hold of the facts and dressing them up with his own brand of playful banter is quite amusing and entertaining. The Comic History of the United States is quite appealing to readers of all ages, especially when they know the “real facts.” However, present day readers may find some of the passages and Bill Nye’s remarks quite offensive and politically incorrect for the more enlightened times we now live in. His remarks on African Americans and American Indians can be quite jarring. The Comic History of the United States can become a platform for discussing attitudes and perspectives that were present in the last century. Besides being a journalist and humor writer, Bill Nye was also very popular on the lecture circuit and regaled audiences all over the country with his humorous speeches. In today’s time, he would probably be regarded as a standup comedian and as such, his views would certainly not be taken as grounds for an offense. More great books at LoyalBooks.com

    the Sarah and Sally show

    by

    Since Apr 13, 2023 20:43 UTC

British twins, Sarah J. Edwards and Sally A. Edwards own publishing company BLAG.

Sally and Sarah started BLAG, a fanzine while they were at art school in the 90’s using a DIY approach:

Saturday job pay, fake id, a camera, typewriter, access to a payphone, one hour photoshop and after asking nicely—unofficially, an art college photocopier. BLAG was secretly born as a Xerox’d ‘zine, heavily inspired by deluxe glossy golden era style magazines. Mixing humorous interviews. Sally and Sarah grew the ‘zine to an international glossy using job wages, ambition and determination.

The twins have been responsible for championing culture in the form of musicians, actors and artists ahead of the curve, from Questlove, The Neptunes, J. Dilla and OutKast to Adrien Brody, James McAvoy and Cillian Murphy to Queens of The Stone Age, The Raconteurs and Amy Winehouse, more recently ATARASHII GAKKO!, Daniel Arsham and JAWNY.

The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde

The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde

    by

    Since Oct 13, 2020 00:00 UTC

An American diplomat’s family moves into an ancient stately mansion. They’re warned by the owner that it is haunted by a most horrifying and gruesome spirit who had once cruelly murdered his own wife. The story progresses with creaking floor boards, mysterious passages, dark attics, clanking chains, and weird howling. Yet, the reader is totally unprepared for Oscar Wilde’s brand of tongue in cheek humor as he takes all the ingredients of a traditional ghost story and turns it on its head, and creates a hilarious parody instead of a morbid saga! The Canterville Ghost was the first of Oscar Wilde’s short stories to be published. It appeared in a magazine in 1887 and provides a prophetic glimpse into Wilde’s genius for comic timing, dialogue and situational comedy. He had a successful career as a journalist and poet and consequently turned to fiction and drama. The plot is one that leaves the reader chuckling at every turn. The American diplomat and his family are products of a purely pragmatic culture which has no patience with sentimentality and superstitions. The English mansion is steeped in legends about ancient curses and the diabolical doings of a seventeenth century specter. The Americans believe in a robust, healthy and practical way of life and use all manner of branded cleaning products. The two youngest members of the family called the Stars and Stripes set wicked traps for the ghost, while the daughter Virginia is the only one who can truly appreciate the poor ghost’s situation. The Canterville Ghost revels in stereotypes and mocks at society’s typical ways of viewing people and history. Pitting the brash and impertinent Americans against the dignified and aristocratic English provides plenty of room for comedy. The reader comes to realize that the ghosts of the past have no power over the optimism of the present. It is also a tale of the clash between the Old and New Worlds, of new money and old, traditions and modernity. It also portrays the gradual decay of the aristocratic English way of life in the Victorian era and the advent of American heiresses whose untold millions made in a variety of industrial businesses pumped new blood into the dying aristocracy of Old England. However, the genteel good breeding of Lord Canterville and the innocent goodness of fifteen year old Virginia provide food for thought as Wilde creates characters who stand out in their humanity and compassion. It focuses on issues and topics that are overlooked or pushed aside by the more mainstream media. The hosts champion adversarial journalism. Guests featured are often rarely heard or unheard voices. Or they are voices who we think can benefit from a space to have conversations, which allow for dissent and the unpacking of unpopular ideas. SUBSCRIBE on Spotify for $4.99/month and gain access to full episodes instead of clips or highlights from each week’s show.

On this week’s episode, Andrea Ritchie joins Rania Khalek and Kevin Gosztola for a conversation about organizing for abortion decriminalization in a post-Roe United States.

Andrea is a Black lesbian immigrant, and the author of the book Invisible No More: Police Violence Against Black Women and Women of Color. She is the co-author of the forthcoming book No More Police: A Case For Abolition, as well as the book Queer (In)Justice. And Andrea is the co-founder of Interrupting Criminalization.

First, Andrea assesses the terrain for abortion decriminalization as it exists now that the US Supreme Court abolished federal rights to reproductive health care. She comments on the brewing threat of prosecutions against women and medical providers.

Planned Parenthood in Montana announced they would no longer provide abortion medication to out-of-state patients. Andrea expresses her disgust and frustration with this decision.

Later in the show, Andrea describes what people can do. Many of the ideas outlined stem from recognizing the connections between struggles for gender justice, migrant justice, economic and racial justice, sex workers’ rights, disability justice, etc.

Storyteller Abner Serd specializes in short humor with a twist. His stories often pull the listener out of the normal sphere of reality and into a surrealistic landscape populated with eccentric characters who nonchalantly redefine common sense. Think of these stories as comic strips for the ears: short, weekly doses of whimsy. What yarns will Abner spin today? As Jimmy Fingerbutton the inventor once put it, “the world is full of things nobody ever thought of before.” This is an all-ages podcast – there’s a little something for everybody. In 2016, the podcast switched from a daily to a weekly release schedule, with a new story appearing each Wednesday.
