Radio Salaam Shalom is a Bristol-based online radio station staffed by a volunteer team mainly from the Jewish and Muslim communities of the city. It launched on 1 February 2007. The project is seen as the UK’s first Muslim-Jewish initiative of this type and emphasises the voice of the “moderate majority”. Its programmes give people from both communities the chance to celebrate, debate and share the events, issues and faith that shape their daily lives. It has received coverage and been the subject of special features on many of the world’s biggest broadcast networks, including NHK (Japan), RAI2 (Italy), BBC WORLD, BBCTV, CBC (Canada), CHANNEL 4 (UK), TRIPLE J (Australia), PRESS TV (Iran) and AL JAZEERA ENGLISH amongst others. As the latest conflict in Gaza fades from the headlines, we focus on the issue of what lies ahead when the guns fall silent and the reporters go home: is there still a real vision for a peace beyond the destruction? In this podcast, our team of Muslim and Jewish presenters are joined by contributors from around the world. Presenter Danyel also provides an eyewitness account of the political activism caused by the Gaza conflict, (17m30s in). It closes at 1h14m50s with a special look at Gaza by the “Kickin’ It Back” team. We also feature the music of Yusuf Islam, David Broza and Said Murad, Hdag Nagash and other artists promoting the message of peace. A safe space where we can both accept our chronic clumsiness and overcome our unavoidable fears as our brains and hearts encounter the unexpected. The podcasts provide a practical, hands-on approach to helping people who want to open themselves to form new relationships with folk with a different cultural or racial background – in faith communities, or any other kind of community. Welcome to the first ever intercultural podcast. ‘Absolutely Intercultural!’ is its name and, as far as we know, this is the first podcast in the world to deal with intercultural issues. We’ll be releasing a new episode every second Friday at lunchtime, looking at all aspects of human intercultural communication. For example, we’ll be hearing from students on foreign work placements, asking how teachers can make use of intercultural exercises and simulations in their classroom and sharing with you any intercultural stories we come across. ‘Absolutely Intercultural!’ won’t be so much about passing on information but more about starting an intercultural dialogue between the makers, and you, the contributors and listeners.
