In this book, Jimmy Skunk has encounters with Reddy Fox, Peter Rabbit, Unc’ Billy Possum and other acquaintances of his in the Green Meadows and Green Forest. Along the way, we learn some of the habits of Jimmy and his friends and we learn little lessons about life such as the importance of always keeping one’s temper, keeping promises and not playing practical jokes. The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian: Science Fiction for Kids

The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian: Science Fiction for Kids

    by

    Since Aug 1, 2016 06:22 UTC

The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian is a serialized science-fiction story for kids (start with Episode 1), told in 15-20 minute episodes for parents to put on when driving around town, or to marathon on road trips, or to bond over before bed. The story centers on Finn Caspian, an 8-year-old boy aboard The Famous Marlowe 280 Interplanetary Exploratory Space Station. He and his friends Abigail, Elias and Vale are Explorers Troop 301, taking off from the Marlowe to explore uncharted planets, help the occasional alien, and solve a mystery that threatens to destroy the Marlowe. When pressed, we describe it as a “mystery gang” story, sort of like Scooby-Doo in space. The story is written and performed by Jonathan Messinger, author of Hiding Out, former web editor of Time Out Chicago Kids, and father of two boys. His son Griffin, 7, serves as editor of the story, appearing in episodes to critique, make predictions and express skepticism that his father knows what he’s talking about, which also happens to be the way the rest of their relationship works. Produced in partnership with Gen-Z Media. For more great shows, visit GZMshows.com.

At the Back of the North Wind by George MacDonald

At the Back of the North Wind by George MacDonald

    by

    Since Nov 26, 2023 00:00 UTC

Written by the man who mentored Lewis Carroll and encouraged him to submit Alice for publication, At the Back of the North Wind is today a forgotten classic of Victorian children’s literature. The story tells of a young boy named Diamond, the son of a coachman in an English country mansion. Diamond sleeps in the hayloft above the stables and at night he finds he’s disturbed by the wind blowing through the holes in the wall. He tries to plug them but one night, he hears an imperious voice scolding him for doing this! It is the magnificent North Wind that speaks to him and tells him that he’s closed up her windows. Puzzled and intrigued, Diamond begins a conversation with this haughty lady who then invites him to travel with her and see the wide world. What follows is a series of wonderful adventures and experiences in which the great North Wind teaches Diamond the most valuable lessons that a human being can learn – about truth, goodness, beauty and love. The book is said to have inspired writers like CS Lewis. The author, George Macdonald was a literary luminary of his day. Friend of the great artists, writers and philosophers of the day like John Ruskin, Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Antony Trollope, Walt Whitman, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and a host of others, he was an ordained minister of the Church besides being a gifted poet and writer. His body of work includes novels, fantasy stories, children’s stories, poetry, non-fiction and religious treatises. He was also a staunch advocate of criminal reform and opposed punishment in any form, believing that love could conquer everything. At the Back of the North Wind has been seen by many scholars as an allegorical tale. But for young readers, it is simply an exciting fantasy story.

Reducing Overwhelm for Christian Homeschool Moms of Special Needs and Neurodiverse Kids ***TOP 1% Parenting + Family Life Podcast*** Do you wish your home and homeschool could be peaceful? Do you long for simple systems that help life run on autopilot, instead of feeling overwhelmed and like an angry task-master who can’t get anyone to help you? Are you ready to kick fear to the curb, LOSE THAT OVERWHELM, and move into a satisfying life of Proverbs 31 stewardship? Welcome to the family!!! You have been led here divinely, because Jesus is the Good Shepherd. In this podcast, you will find secrets to reducing the overwhelm that motherhood brings, shifting into living a life of intention and unity in your homeschool, homemaking, and health, while raising special needs or neurodiverse children. Reducing overwhelm happens simply and joyfully with a few systems and hacks, which I will share here. Living out Charlotte Mason’s homeschool teachings seamlessly creates a lifestyle that extends beyond formal education and encompasses the whole family’s approach to living and learning in a holistic joy-filled way! My mission is to journey alongside you, empowering and equipping you to build a solid family foundation to bless your future generations, while you confidently live out your calling with joy and assurance, despite the challenges of the special needs life. For years I struggled to feel confident amid the overwhelming chaos of daily life. I was frantically searching for answers to mysterious chronic illnesses, neurodiversity in my children, and special needs. I felt desperate to know how to educate and train my children perfectly, longing to keep a Pinterest-worthy home, while trying to meet my unrealistic internal expectations –and keep up with military spouse life. I felt like a hamster running on a never ending wheel. I finally realized that to create the foundations in my family which I KNEW I was called to create, something BIG had to change. I did not want to wake up someday to regret and sorrow. I longed for simple solutions to living this challenging but rich special needs life with purpose, while fulfilling my calling to motherhood, health, homeschooling, and homemaking. SO, with God’s grace and guidance, I have learned to reduce the overwhelm and I am still on this journey today. I can’t wait to share what I continue to learn with YOU! Cleopatra by Jacob Abbott

    Cleopatra by Jacob Abbott

    by

    Since Dec 22, 2023 00:00 UTC

The French mathematician and philosopher, Blaise Pascal once remarked, “Cleopatra’s nose. Had it been shorter, the whole face of the world would have been changed!” Such was the legendary power and attraction of this most famous woman ruler that generations of artists, readers, writers, historians and poets have ensured that she remains immortal and unforgettable. Jacob Abbott’s Cleopatra is a work of historical biography, told in a highly dramatic and gripping style. It brings the characters and the circumstances to vivid life, making it an entertaining read for people of all ages. The authentic rendering of ancient Rome, Egypt and the famous characters who played their part in this ancient drama are wonderfully depicted. The romance, betrayal, war, hatred, destruction, murder, the power and the glory of empire are all captured in this sweeping narrative. Abbot’s brief preface gives a glimpse of how much this fabulous queen has indeed altered the course of human lives. Cleopatra’s history is portrayed in great detail. The book opens with the lines, “The story of Cleopatra is a story of crime” and frankly speaks of the incestuous practices that existed in ancient Egypt. The queen was by birth an Egyptian but the blood of her Greek ancestors flowed in her veins. Abbot describes the land of Egypt in glowing terms and ascribes many of Cleopatra’s faults to the luxury and surrounding she was brought up in. The mighty dynasty of the Ptolemies, the fabled city of Alexandria, Cleopatra’s ascent of the throne as a blooming young lass of fifteen, her marriage and exile, the circumstances under which she meets Julius Caesar, their relationship and Caesar’s assassination in Rome are all the stuff of legend. Today, most students of history and literature would be familiar with many aspects of the story. Shakespeare himself famously dealt with it in his Antony and Cleopatra, poets and musicians depicted her almost unbelievable power over men, while historians have undertaken serious research into all these claims. However, the lady has, centuries after her tragic and spectacular suicide, remained an enigma. Jacob Abbot wrote primarily for children. In Cleopatra, he presents history not in the usual vapid, dull way, but in a manner that makes the events come alive, thus making them memorable and interesting for children and adults alike. As a biography that attempts to solve the riddle of Cleopatra’s amazing life and times, this is indeed a fascinating read.

Little Wizard Stories of Oz by L. Frank Baum

Little Wizard Stories of Oz by L. Frank Baum

    by

    Since Dec 28, 2023 00:00 UTC

The “Little Wizard Stories of Oz” are six short stories written by L. Frank Baum in 1913. By all accounts, Baum intended to finish the Oz series with “The Emerald City of Oz,” published in 1910. Following that, he attempted to write non-Oz books, publishing “The Sea Fairies” in 1911 and “Sky Island” in 1912. But, (as Baum himself laments in the prefaces of many of his Oz books,) his “little tyrants” were only interested in hearing more Oz stories. So in 1913, he returned to writing about Oz, putting out both The “Little Wizard Stories” and “The Patchwork Girl of Oz” that year. The Little Wizard Stories were geared toward younger children and were originally published separately, “similar in style to today’s Little Golden Books.” The next year, they were published together as one volume. Each Little Wizard Story revolves around the adventures of two famous Oz characters, and their humorous adventures in and around the land of Oz.
