The Enchanted Castle by Edith Nesbit

The Enchanted Castle by Edith Nesbit

    by

    Since Dec 22, 2023 00:00 UTC

A children’s fantasy novel first published in 1907, The Enchanted Castle recounts the marvelous adventures encountered by a curious group of children searching to enliven their summer holiday. Written in episodes, the novel has a different adventure in store for its young heroes in each chapter, including vibrant statues, banquets with Greek gods, and reunited lovers. The novel begins when siblings Gerald, James and Kathleen are required to spend their summer holiday in a boarding school, due to unfortunate events at home and are consequently left under the supervision of a French schoolmistress. The children seem to be sentenced to a summer of utter boredom, however, one day the children decide to explore the neighboring countryside in hopes of bringing excitement to their otherwise monotonous routine. During their time outside they stumble upon a secret passageway and follow its trail. When they emerge from the tunnel, they are engulfed by a castle situated in an elaborate garden, where they also meet a young girl Mabel, who declares she is a princess. Furthermore, Mabel claims that the castle is full of magic and leads them inside to show them its treasures, which includes a plain metal ring which supposedly causes invisibility. Naturally the children are skeptical and it is not until the ring actually does work and makes Mabel invisible, that they are swayed to believe the contrary. The four children panic and Mabel confesses that the country estate is not an enchanted castle and that she is simply the housekeeper’s niece, and not a princess. However what seemed to be an innocent game of dress-up takes a turn of events as the group get thrown into a magical frenzy indicating the beginning of their exciting adventures and a step away from their expected mundane summer. Nesbit cleverly depicts the notion that one should be careful of what they wish for, because it just may come true, but never without a price. An engrossing tale of magic, fantasy, humor, and adventurous mishaps blended in an utmost imaginative way, the novel has remained a favorite children’s classic which has stood the test of time.

Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy

Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy

    by

    Since Nov 11, 2023 00:00 UTC

A young man from a poor, working-class background, passionate about education, who aspires to become a professor. His teacher, a respected role model who turns out to have feet of clay. An independent, free-spirited woman. Another who is scheming, selfish and flirtatious. Dominating their lives is the magnificent university town of Christminster. All these and a host of other colorful, memorable characters inhabit the pages of Thomas Hardy’s monumental fourteenth novel published in 1895. Thomas Hardy’s fame as a novelist rivals that of even Dickens in Victorian literature. Creator of unforgettable novels like Far from the Madding Crowd, Tess of the d’Ubervilles, Under the Greenwood Tree and the Mayor of Casterbridge, his essential humanity and the depth that he brings to his characters are what sets him apart. A largely self-taught man, he went on to become a skilled architect and restorer of old buildings. His life-long love of languages, music, country-side life, languages and history emerges in most of his works. Jude the Obscure tells the story of a young orphan, Jude Fawley who is devoted to academics though his impoverished aunt (who rears him) wants him to start work as early as possible as a stone-mason. Jude’s inspirational teacher, Richard Phillotson, leaves the village for better pastures in the university at Christminster, leaving Jude to dream about a future career as a teacher. Instead, the travails of his working-class background begin to slowly consume him. He is deceived into marrying Arabella Donn, the come-hither daughter of the local butcher. After many trials and tribulations, Jude reaches Christminster, where a terrible disappointment awaits him. Jude’s meeting with his brilliant, free-thinking cousin Sue Bridehead is another turning point in his life. The novel scandalized Victorian readers when it first came out due to its revolutionary ideas about sexuality, women’s rights and the rise of the working class. Copies of the book were publicly burned in London and other cities. Thousands of people wrote to Hardy from all over the world, severely criticizing him/the novel which shocked him into abandoning fiction-writing till his death. He continued to publish poetry and drama and remained a successful writer. In 1912, a new edition was well-received by more modern readers and the book delights young and old even today. The universal themes of marriage, love, class-distinctions, education, women’s rights, religion and human migrations from their native homes to cities are brilliantly explored in Jude the Obscure, making it a must read classic.

    Story Before Bed

    Story Before Bed

    by

    Since Feb 4, 2015 22:10 UTC

Short, simple bedtime stories for kids, by kids. You’re a parent. And, of course, you are striving to be a good mom or a good dad. And you want your kids to grow up to be awesome. You’ve heard by now that quality time is more valuable than quantity time. So you need to do something of quality with the time you have with your kids, and at the same time let your kids discover who they are so they can make themselves awesome, cause let’s face it – You won’t always be there to do it for them. And in fact, every single day they are growing out of their clothes, their innocence, and eventually out of your home and into the world – so if there is quality time to be had, that time would be now. How: Tell your child stories. But not just you – You AND your child need to tell EACH OTHER stories. Because the best thing you can do for your child before they leave the nest to take on the world, is give them the confidence to be who they are, to solve the unexpected problems that they’ll encounter out there, and to leverage their creativity and imagination to enjoy life. Quality one-on-one time – making up stories with your child – shows them that you care about how they think, what they feel, and the things they say. You listen. You respond. You care. And for them, that’s what the best mom or dad does. “But, I’m not creative.” Untrue! But whether you feel that way or not, we think our stories can help. They aren’t perfect. Of course not – That’s the point. But we feel good about the quality of time we spend – even if it is only about 8 minutes are so. Before bed, if you can’t spend the time to tell a story together, let them listen to one of ours (or in the car, when you need quiet time, or any other time – because imagination has always been better than animation). Maybe it will give them ideas for the stories YOU tell – Together. So whether you’ll be listening to our stories every now and again, or never again – Subscribe. That way, you’ll have access to them if/when you need them. And we’ll know that even though our stories aren’t perfect, we are all working together to Inspire Dreams.
