Japanese Fairy Tales by Yei Theodora Ozaki

Japanese Fairy Tales by Yei Theodora Ozaki

    by

    Since Dec 11, 2023 00:00 UTC

Many of us are familiar with Grimm’s Fairy Tales, or children’s stories from France, England, China, India and Germany, but are less aware of similar folk tales and children’s stories from Japan. Japanese Fairy Tales by Yei Theodora Ozaki captures the exotic flavor, traditions and customs of this ancient land. Published in 1903 entitled the Japanese Fairy Book, the title was changed in the 1908 edition to Japanese Fairy Tales. Theodora Ozaki was the daughter of a wealthy Japanese aristocrat Baron Ozaki, the first Japanese man to study in the West, and his wife, an American schoolteacher’s daughter. The couple separated after a brief marriage and Theodora lived with her father in Japan. She worked as a secretary and spent much of her spare time collecting traditional Japanese stories. She was encouraged to publish the collection by the Scottish writer Andrew Lang, who was himself an accomplished writer of children’s literature. The twenty-two stories contained in this volume include one of the best-known Japanese tales, The Tongue-Cut Sparrow, which tells of a vengeful old woman who cruelly cuts off the tongue of her husband’s talking sparrow. The charming details in this story are indeed very interesting, as many of the architectural and cultural features of Japanese houses and traditions are provided in it. The Ogre of Rashomon is another macabre tale, while the delightful Adventures of Kintaro the Golden Boy is sure to charm young and old. An interesting feature is that the author often gives the meaning of Japanese words and terms and explains many of the customs for the benefit of non-Japanese readers. In the preface she states that her aim is to bring these beautiful tales to those outside her country so that they may love and enjoy them too. The original edition had some superb illustrations and wood-cuts by Japanese artists.

Anne of Avonlea by Lucy Maud Montgomery

Anne of Avonlea by Lucy Maud Montgomery

    by

    Since Dec 4, 2021 00:00 UTC

If you’ve read and loved Anne of Green Gables you will surely be delighted to follow Anne’s further adventures in Anne of Avonlea. In this sequel, we find Anne Shirley teaching in Avonlea School though she continues her studies at home with Gilbert Blythe. Lucy Maud Montgomery first published the best selling Anne of Green Gables in 1908. Enthused by the amazing success of this account of a young orphan girl who arrives by mistake on Prince Edward Island, Canada, the author followed it up with five more sequels, tracing Anne’s career and life. Three other books and a couple of collections also feature Anne, her family, children and friends. The series has remained one of the firm favorites of children and older readers. Anne of Avonlea was published in 1909, immediately after the first book. It contains several of the characters present in the previous book, so readers get a feeling of comfortable continuity as they follow Anne in her new role as a student teacher. She is now officially a grownup person and part of the adult society of Avonlea village and soon plunges into a series of situations in which dismay and delight have equal share. The book has a blend of old and new characters. Her best friend, Diana Barry, her foster mom Marilla Cuthbert, Jane Andrews her favorite teacher, Gilbert Blythe her enemy turned friend and Priscilla Grant an old classmate are people the reader would have met in the earlier book. New characters like the crotchety Mr. Harrison, who owns a rude parrot appropriately called Ginger, the twins Dora and Davy Keith, Paul Irving and a few more provide lots of fun and entertainment. Anne remains as delightful as she was in the earlier book, getting in and out of various scrapes of her own creation, imaginative, gutsy and full of spirit and joie de vivre. Towards the end of the book, we find her and Gilbert charting out their future careers and planning to start university life in Redmond College which of course keeps readers eagerly awaiting the next book in the series! Touches of romance, flashes of Montgomery’s typical tongue in cheek humor, a lively and interesting heroine, wonderful descriptions of the Canadian landscape and the idyllic Prince Edward Island countryside and a host of memorable characters make Anne of Avonlea a great read especially if you’re continuing on with the entire series! All books in this series:1 Anne of Green Gables2 Anne of Avonlea3 Anne of the Island5 Anne’s House of Dreams7 Rainbow Valley8 Rilla of Ingleside More great books at LoyalBooks.com

What do I have to do, drive a nail through your head? Parental help.

    by

    Since Apr 22, 2020 16:00 UTC

I know right away that you’re wondering what the title of this podcast means. Well to put a short spin to it while my dad was teaching me how to drive, I kept blowing yellow lights. I had seen him do it all my life. Floor it and send all the kids in the backseat tumbling. On my first lesson my father had decided he wanted me to learn how to drive a stick shift first. I had driven many of my friend’s cars with stick shifts so it wasn’t a problem. The problem revolved around putting a 6’4” 260 lbs. Dad in the passenger seat and a 6’ 250 lbs. son in the driver’s seat of a1969 Volkswagen Beetle. It was like shoving 10 lbs. of potatoes in a 5-pound sack.As I blew through 3 yellow lights in a row at the same speed he always did, he would yell some poetic words of wisdom at me. Something I was quite use too. On the third light he finally said the sentence above “What do I have to do, drive a nail through your head”? Now mind you I was 15 at the time. I’m 58 now. If you don’t think what you say to your kid’s won’t come back to haunt you, you badly mistaken. We’ll cover lots of good parenting skills and if you have a funny story about your parents, I’d love to hear them.By the way, My Wife and I raised 4 children, got them all through college, and now they are working in their chosen careers. She was really the warden in the house, I was just the enforcer. But remember this, we NEVER hit our kids. That’s the kind of thing that drives me crazy to see some over stressed mom dragging Owen by the arm and beating his ass at the same time because he went for the lucky charms box. (The nerve of some 3-year old’s). We’ll give you some valuable hints on how to stop hitting a 3-year-old and coming to your senses. I really think you’ll enjoy the podcast. I’m quite the story teller.Little Scotty

    Since Dec 31, 2021 21:52 UTC

Hey, it’s us: Amanda and Megan. We’re just two average moms who love their kids so dang much we decided to start a podcast! This is not another mommy podcast, with experts informing you how you can be a better mom/wife/daughter/coworker/best friend in twenty-six sugar-coated steps. What WILL you find in this podcast? Validation? Yes. Laughter? Hopefully. Inspiring advice? Probably not. Truthfully, no matter how many parenting books we read or conferences we attend, we still find ourselves raising our eyebrows and stifling laughs at our offspring. So, at the end of the day, we just slap each other on the butts (like you did in high school volleyball) and say: “you really tried, and that’s all that matters…”

The Best Debate in the Universe

The Best Debate in the Universe

    by

    Since Jun 7, 2016 18:00 UTC

Two sides of a debate from the greatest mind of the 21st century and all other centuries: The Best Debate in the Universe Welcome to the debut episode of The Best Debate in the Universe. This is a show that covers more topical and current news stories. It’s a show that’s more about you than it is about me because A) I’m perfect, and B) I’m conducting an experiment to see if you idiots can think rationally after being presented with both sides of an issue, and not just your echo chamber. Tired of seeing shitty debates in online forums devolve into name-calling, flame wars and lost friends? Ever wonder if anyone can ever be persuaded by the other side? That’s what this show is all about because I am the only person qualified to argue counter to myself. I’m like the Hawking, Einstein and Feynman of debate, if they were smarter. For the first episode, I tackle two huge recent controversies in the news: the “soft sexism” of the new Ghostbusters movie and the audacity of Fox to market an X-Men, a fictional universe in which a telekinetic, immortal alien chokes out a a shapeshifting superhuman. I also dicsuss The Angry Video Game Nerd’s refusal to see the new Ghostbusters 2016 movie because it looks like shit. Who knew not seeing it was an option? madcastmedia.com Sources: Hollywood Reporter – http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/rambling-reporter/rose-mcgowan-calls-x-men-898538 BirthMoviesDeath.com – http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/05/18/the-soft-sexism-of-hating-on-the-new-ghostbusters

The Empowered Mama with Lisa Druxman

    by

    Since Oct 24, 2014 19:43 UTC

Join Lisa Druxman each week to reclaim your time, your health and yourself. We talk about wellness, work, productivity, leadership, and happiness. It’s time to connect with your passion and your purpose and to design a life you love to live. This is a weekly podcast. Use a podcast app on your smartphone so you can subscribe and listen easily!

Emotions play an important role in how we think, feel, react and behave; they are an essential part of being human. Everyone goes through tough chapters in life where they experience mental and emotional stress, like sadness, anxiety, fear, and grief, for example. Acknowledging how you feel and committing to take care of yourself emotionally, creatively, physically, and spiritually, can help turn negative experiences and the thoughts and feelings that come along with it, into change, growth, and healing. In a book that’s both provocative and radical, holistic psychiatrist Kelly Brogan, M.D., author of A Mind of Your Own, charts a new path to get real, get well, and get free.

This is the Empowered Mama Podcast.

Anxiety and depression are a mental health epidemic, with anxiety disorders taking the lead for the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 18.1% of the national population and 260 million people globally (According to the Anxiety and Depression Association). 322 million people worldwide live with depression, which occurs more often in women than men (According to the Anxiety and Depression Association).

Mental health issues can happen to anyone…the mom-next-door experiencing Postpartum Depression and/or Postpartum Anxiety after the birth of her baby, the successful entrepreneur experiencing panic attacks who’s been diagnosed with Panic Disorder, the nurse hiding crippling OCD from her co-workers, the wife suffering Major Depressive Disorder from the loss of a baby or her military spouse…the SAHM moms, the working moms, your best friend…you.

People who experience any form of a mood disorder know how crippling these feelings and the “new normal” they seem to be facing can be. Treating any type of mental illness often requires a combination approach, ranging from talk therapy with a psychologist, meds, psychiatrist care, and/or lifestyle adjustments or changes. You are not alone in this journey, and we support you seeking help if and when you — or someone you know — notices a change in your thoughts and feelings. This is especially important to be on the lookout for postpartum, when a new mom may be susceptible to Postpartum Depression, Postpartum OCD, Postpartum Anxiety, and/or Postpartum Psychosis.

Medications can be a life-saving necessity for some with mental illness, and others may wish to seek a holistic route — or a blend. We support whatever form of treatment works for you, whether that means going to weekly therapy with a psychologist, taking meds prescribed by your licensed doctor or psychiatrist, changing your diet and lifestyle, or any combination.

Disclaimer: Always seek medical advice from a board-certified therapist, psychiatrist, and/or physician before beginning any new treatment plan and deciding what approach to take on your mental health journey.

Today, we are interviewing Kelly Brogan, M.D., a holistic psychiatrist who specializes in treating mental health through a natural approach. We know this route of treatment is not for everyone. We know meds save lives. We also know that there are potential ways to feel better outside of the traditional western medicine scope.
