    Self? Help!

    by

    Since Feb 19, 2019 10:57 UTC

Self? Help! is the podcast for anyone who’s thought: Who the hell am I? What in god’s name am I doing? And how did I get here of all places? And then to figure it all out, you turned to a book—because you’re that kind of person, and so is your host, Moth Storyteller and creator of Memory Motel, Terence Mickey. He doesn’t care from where you seek your guidance, whether it’s Leo Tolstoy or Dr. Seuss. He’s a firm believer that we cannot get enough help in this life and that books are, indeed, magic. In Season 1, listen in as Terence talks with New York Times best-selling authors Susan Cain, Paula McLain, Johann Hari, Sarah Knight, and Eli Finkel.

It is not the one you have seen so well advertised in the media. It has little to do with positive thinking and really getting in touch with your true purpose in life. Those people you read about in People magazine and see on television know it. Those people who enjoy the lives we would love to have – will never reveal this basic truth. It would be like a magician giving away their secret, and secret it is – the real secret! You won’t read or hear about this one… when you find out what it is, you will know why! Life is too often a sucker’s game. Those who play by the rules, believe in fair play, and believe that what goes around comes around in life, are very often the greatest losers in life. In every one of life’s arenas there is a “Hidden Game.” While the rank and file are all busy with trying to win the brass ring, there is a small group of insiders, the “Players,” who are coolly, cynically, pulling the strings. These “Players” take the lion’s share of life’s rewards – the beautiful homes, the cars, the svelte spouses – leaving the rest of humanity to fight over the crumbs they leave behind. Imagine, what it would be like to be able to recognize this pattern – know how it works, and predict what will happen next? It would be like having a crystal ball – always one step ahead of the game, knowing what is going to happen next! You will have the confidence which comes from knowing that life is a Game – and you have THE EDGE!arantee success – Life holds no promises!

Everyday life deserves a closer look. That’s what I do. I tell stories about the characters and situations often mistaken as humdrum. DRMLK Podcast is creative nonfiction: shorts, memoir, satire and essays with occasional seizures of fiction, interviews and maybe even poetry. My name is Nathaniel Barber. I am a writer and photographer living in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Life is a story. This is nonfiction, so you don’t have to. Enjoy.

On February 12, 1971, in Durham, North Carolina, a 20 year-old nursing student and her 19 year-old boyfriend left a Valentine’s Dance to park down a secluded lover’s lane. They never returned. Two weeks later, their bodies were found deep within the Carolina pines. They had been strangled, tortured, and murdered. Their murders have never been solved. THE LONG DANCE is the story of the lives touched by the murders of Patricia Mann and Jesse McBane. Produced by crime fiction author Eryk Pruitt, investigative reporter Drew Adamek, and sound engineer Piper Kessler, it uses recorded interviews to tell the tragic tale of North Carolina’s most baffling murder case.
