A wandering king who’s a war-hero doomed to roam the earth by a vengeful God, a plethora of fantastic experiences, a wife battling the invasion of suitors who wish to replace her missing husband, a son in search of his father – the Odyssey is a rich tapestry of incredible experiences and unforgettable characters. A must-read classic for anyone who wants to understand the fundamentals of Western mythology, it is a sequel to the Illiad which recounts the magnificent saga of the Trojan War. The Odyssey continues on, describing the trials and tribulations of the Greeks under the leadership of Odysseus. Reputed to have been composed nearly three thousand years ago, its authorship is still being debated by scholars, though much of it is attributed to the blind poet Homer about whom very little is known. Yet the Illiad and The Odyssey remain the definitive foundations of all Western literature. The Odyssey is a magnificent epic tale that portrays the journey called life. In fact the word “odyssey” in English itself has come to mean a long and eventful journey. In the preceding book The Illiad, Odysseus called Ulysses in Roman mythology, the king of Ithaca, gets embroiled in the Trojan War through the trickery of the Greeks. But once inside, his wonderful qualities of intellect, strategy and leadership come to the foreground as he leads his soldiers to victory. The story of the Odyssey begins when the war of The Illiad ends. Odysseus and his men embark to return to Ithaca but his sworn enemy, the sea god Poseidon, stymies him at every turn, sending storms and foul weather, forcing the wanderers to take shelter in strange and sinister lands. The Odyssey is, besides, the story of Odysseus’ beautiful wife Penelope, whose life becomes a struggle, fighting off the innumerable hopefuls who wish to take over her kingdom and her fortune in the absence of her husband. It is also the poignant growing-up tale of Telemachus, a faithful and steadfast son, who refuses to believe that his father won’t return. There are many notable translations from the original Greek and it has also been extensively portrayed in art, literature, television and television in languages around the world. Full of human tragedy, bizarre and fantastic creatures, gods and magical beasts, the Odyssey is a treasure-chest of marvelous events. I’ve been told my whole life that I’m a little blunt, not sharp, blunt. I simply lack the finesse required for sharpness. Maybe it’s because I’m a Sagittarius or the fact that I am a sensitive bitch, nonetheless my mind is both a scary and enlightened place, sometimes my mind is kind to me, sometimes it hates me. I sometimes like it here, I sometimes don’t, and the older I get the more I’m fucking okay with that. I don’t have all the answers, nor do I claim to (well to be fair sometimes I really do have the answers, I just don’t like them). I’m on a learning, discovering, and enlightenment journey. I have questions, many questions, for life and the experiences it encompasses. Something I say a lot is the expression “that makes no sense” and usually it slips, sometimes I scream it out, sometimes under my breath when I come to the realization that there is a bigger picture. That many of the things we are raised to believe make sense really don’t. I love love these moments because it means I’ve been given a chance to learn, listen, and grow from someone’s story, experiences, and existence. In these moments my mind got bigger, my capacity for understanding and knowledge expounded and my empathy beamed. So this podcast will simply be me asking a lot of questions, talking, and learning about whatever I want. So come along! You may agree or you may disagree BUT just remember life is full of glitter and glue and we ebb and we flow!

“Being sundry explorations, made while afoot and penniless in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. These adventures convey and illustrate the rules of beggary for poets and some others.” Published in 1919, this is poet Vachel Lindsay’s description of his travels “afoot and penniless” across the southern and eastern United States, staying with strangers, reciting or trading poetry for dinner, and along the way, describing in stories and poetry, mostly stories, the people and places he encountered. Think “Travels With Charlie,” minus the dog and the Winnebago, and much, much earlier. From the Dedication and Preface: “There are one hundred new poets in the villages of the land. This Handy Guide is dedicated to the younger sons of the wid earth, to the runnaway boys and girls getting further from home every hour, to the prodigals still wasting their substance in riotous living, be they gamblers or blasphemers or plain drunks; to the heretics of whatever school to whom life is a rebellion with banners; to those who are willing to accept counsel if it be mad counsel.” If you remember the 1960’s, you’ll feel right at home. If you wish you remembered the 1890’s, here’s your chance. You might also feel right at home, at that.
