Reclaiming Jesus Now with Jim Wallis

Reclaiming Jesus Now with Jim Wallis

    by

    Since Sep 23, 2019 04:12 UTC

“Our nation is in crisis. The questions Christ posed in his day, about truth, power, justice and of anyone who claimed to be his followers, offer clues for facing our current moment.” – Jim Wallis

Reclaiming Jesus Now with Jim Wallis is a ten-episode podcast series on the themes of Jim Wallis’ new book, Christ in Crisis: Why We Need to Reclaim Jesus. Wallis is joined by two voices from a rising generation of activists, William Matthews and Allison Trowbridge, who seek to reconcile their own spiritual journeys with the spiritual and political crises we face today.

Jim Wallis’ new book, and the conversations in this podcast, are organized around eight urgent and provocative questions Jesus Christ asked or provoked while pursuing his call:

    – The Neighbor Question
    – The Image Question
    – The Truth Question
    – The Power Question
    – The Fear Question
    – The Caesar Question
    – The Peacemaker Question
    – The Discipleship Question

These questions confront all of us with an invitation and a choice. How will you respond?

It’s a philosophy podcast meant to help me guide my ascent to the real world, the truth, the place where life is worth living; and apparently that means giving up a regular job with good pay to pursue the security of the academic job market – the philosophy job market nonetheless. Join me on my journey as I cover philosophical works and speak with the best philosophical minds I can convince to come on the show!

Participatory development in action – for iPod/iPhone

    by

    Since Jul 20, 2009 23:30 UTC

Do you take your access to water for granted? The Peruvian and Tanzanian communities featured in this album certainly don’t. This album examines how development agencies can empower communities to help themselves by introducing simple technologies, and facilitate the sharing of ideas through education. In the Andean mountains, scarce supplies of water and agricultural challenges give rise to conflict; but the changes engineered by development agencies can start to show a way out of poverty. Meanwhile, Tanzanian rural schoolchildren are instrumental in bringing about positive long-term change within their communities. However, development in practice is very complex and sometimes controversial. The audio tracks delve into the dilemma of how to incorporate the value systems of impoverished communities and agencies, which can have differing agendas. They also show how development is linked to issues of identity, urbanisation, politics, economics, social relations and gender. To complete the album, Dr Helen Yanacopulos of The Open University’s Development Policy and Practice unit explains the choice of some of the case studies provided, and unpicks some of the issues that emerge. This material is taken from The Open University course TU871 Development: context and practice.

    Chopper’s Politics

    Chopper’s Politics

    by

    Since Dec 17, 2021 00:30 UTC

The Telegraph’s weekly politics podcast, presented by Christopher “Chopper” Hope. The podcast has interviews with top politicians and commentators and analysis from the Telegraph’s Westminster team.

Chopper’s Politics is a must listen for those who want to understand British politics, delving into various aspects of policy, key players, and the internal movements of Westminster’s political parties. With a focus on the Conservative Party (Tories), the podcast examines the party’s policies, strategies, and ideologies. The podcast offers insights into prominent figures within the party, including Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Boris Johnson.

With a keen eye on the ever-evolving political landscape, the podcast explores the impact of the Red Wall – the traditionally Labour-supporting areas in the North of England that shifted allegiance to the Conservatives in recent elections – and the dynamics between the Conservatives and the Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer.

In addition to Conservative and Labour politics, the podcast delves into the dynamics of other political parties like the Liberal Democrats and the Scottish National Party providing analysis and discussions on their policies and strategies.

The podcast widens its scope to include discussions on the political climate in London, with a particular focus on the leadership of Mayor Sadiq Khan. It delves into the intricacies of Westminster, the seat of British political power, and examines the notion of the Westminster Bubble, where decisions and discussions can sometimes appear disconnected from the realities of the wider population.

With a strong emphasis on policy analysis, “Chopper’s Politics” provides a platform for informed conversations surrounding British elections and their implications on topics such as geopolitics, foreign policy, international relations, and the evolving role of the United Kingdom in the global arena.

International Development: microcredit and migration – for iPod/iPhone

    by

    Since Jul 20, 2009 23:53 UTC

What does it mean to be poor, or an immigrant? What form should Aid take? This album begins to explore the complex issues of international development in a globalised world, starting with a look at schemes which attempt to alleviate poverty. Small business owners are empowered by micro-financing in Glasgow, while in Argentina a disastrous economic collapse has led to people taking matters into their own hands by creating an alternative social exchange currency. Migrant communities, such as Greek Cypriots and Ethiopians in London, and Sierra Leoneans in Liverpool, have a chance to reveal the issues they’ve faced; while in the audio tracks we hear from experts who are working to expand the contribution that African migrants abroad can make to Africa’s development. Finally, a Chinese “beer pioneer” and China trade experts discuss China’s membership of the World Trade Organisation. To complete the album, Dr Helen Yanacopulos of The Open University’s Development Policy and Practice unit explains the choice of some of the case studies, and unpicks some of the issues that emerge. This material is taken from The Open University course TU871 Development: context and practice.

“Lunch Talks” with Matt & Brendon

    by

    Since Apr 17, 2016 05:53 UTC

“Lunch Talks” was conceived when our table at lunch would develop these kinds of conversations that evoked thought and philosophy. The podcasts and articles on this channel are attempts to express—but not impose—our ideas to the world. Philosophical sage and teacher Gautama Buddha said, “All that we are is a result of what we have thought,” so it is only right that we express these thoughts to find out who we truly are. Enlightenment comes from discovery, so go discover. (P.S. We release a podcast every other weekend and an article every other Wednesday, so go check them out!)

    Cole Moreton’s Can We Talk?

    Cole Moreton’s Can We Talk?

    by

    Since Dec 17, 2021 15:54 UTC

How are you? I’m curious. That’s why I go around asking a lot of questions, watching the responses and listening to the answers from people who are rich or powerful, famous or infamous or who have remarkable stories to tell. We all have those, if the truth be told, even when we feel like we don’t.

I like to listen and to learn because I want to connect with whoever is in front of me: whether that’s Scarlett the Hollywood superstar hiding out in a hotel bar in Manhattan on the day her marriage disintegrates. Or Tiger, the greatest sportsman of all time, mired in scandal and using silence as a weapon as he strides through a crowd, unaware that the truth will pop up anyway, against his will.

Those are just two of the stories I’d like to tell you.

Then there’s Nelson, the former political prisoner now lying in state as the late president of his country, his oceanic soul having flown. There are things to be learned from each of these people and I’d like us to learn together.

I hope you’ll take pleasure in the way the stories are told. They are new and original pieces, written to entertain and for the joy of the telling, using an original interview as a jumping off point. Each stands alone, but together they build into a bigger story. Can We Talk? is about people striving to make sense, striving to be understood, striving to connect.

    Acclaim for Can We Talk?

‘Cole proves in this series how we all need stories in our lives. Proper stories. Well told. In a world of clips and clicks ad shortening attention spans, this hits just the right spot’

Fi Glover, co-host of Fortunately … With Fi and Jane.

‘A brilliant, sensitive storyteller, Cole Moreton produces perfectly formed mini epics that are both thought-provoking and hugely entertaining’

Bestselling author and broadcaster Anita Anand

Series One is available now and includes pieces about encounters with Scarlett Johansson, Tiger Woods, Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela, the Queen and a refugee called Zahra.

Of Such Is The Kingdom, A Novel of Biblical Times

Of Such Is The Kingdom, A Novel of Biblical Times

    Since Jul 18, 2011 16:35 UTC

Step back into New Testament times–to Ancient Jerusalem at the time of Christ and of the historical Roman Empire, and ask: What could a cynical, non-conformist dry-goods salesman, a disgruntled blacksmith, and a musing mendicant all have in common? The answer: Down deep, they all seek something better. But will they find true fulfillment they are seeking? The non-conformist, Manaheem, Herod’s foster brother, is hired by Herod to foment an insurrection against Pontius Pilate, whom he distrusts. Manaheem recruits the blacksmith, Barabbas, to be the insurrection leader, to the dismay of Barabbas’ Godly but fearful wife (when he finally tells her). The mendicant, an unfortunate but pensive young man named Timotheus, joins with an older beggar completely unsympathetic to his musings. Pontius Pilate sees himself as a weak ruler, but his wife pushes him to be stronger and to even take over Herod’s territory. Manaheem re-unites with his former wife, Claressa. In need of more money, he tries to blackmail Herod over his illicit affair With Herodius, his brother’s wife, but, Herod decides to marry Herodius and send his present wife back to her father. John the Baptist preaches to Herod and looses his head. Herod’s palace is attacked, and suspecting Pilate, he tells Manaheem go ahead with the mission. Barabbas is successful in forming a group of insurrectionists and they rehearse for the big day. But will the insurrection succeed? What is next, and how will Barabbas and Manaheem get the money the need? More importantly, will all find the fulfillment they seek? Listen to find out. ———————– WRITING STYLE: The writing style is a unique eclectic style, combining poetry, straight dialogue and 1st person stream-of-consciousness narrative with the 3rd person narration. ————————— Praise for “Of Such Is The Kingdom”: “James M. Becher has artfully taken the events surrounding Jesus’ time…and told what could have been from each characters perspective… Mr. Becher takes you through a wide range of emotions from beginning to end…. This is a great novel that I’m sure you will enjoy!” ——Rudelle Thomas in the January issue of Divine Eloquence.
