Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution by Peter Kropotkin

Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution by Peter Kropotkin

    by

    Since Dec 22, 2023 00:00 UTC

Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution is a book by Peter Kropotkin on the subject of mutual aid, written while he was living in exile in England. It was first published by William Heinemann in London in October 1902. The individual chapters had originally been published in 1890-96 as a series of essays in the British monthly literary magazine, Nineteenth Century. Written partly in response to Social Darwinism and in particular to Thomas H. Huxley’s Nineteenth Century essay, The Struggle for Existence, Kropotkin’s book drew on his experiences in scientific expeditions in Siberia to illustrate the phenomenon of cooperation. After examining the evidence of cooperation in nonhuman animals, “savages,” “barbarians,” in medieval cities, and in modern times, he concludes that cooperation and mutual aid are as important in the evolution of the species as competition and mutual strife, if not more so.

    Dream Psychology by Sigmund Freud

    Dream Psychology by Sigmund Freud

    by

    Since Dec 24, 2019 00:00 UTC

From the dawn of human consciousness, dreams have always fascinated us. Do they mean something? Do dreams help us see into the future? These questions have intrigued us for centuries. Sigmund Freud was one of the first people to examine dreams seriously and interpret them in the context of our waking lives. In Dream Psychology: Psychoanalysis for Beginners, the Austrian psychoanalyst, Dr Sigmund Freud shares his exciting early discoveries that there was indeed a connection between his patients’ dreams and their mental disturbances. Sigmund Freud was educated to be a neurologist, but went on to revolutionize the world of human psychology by establishing the theories of psychoanalysis. This is a clinical therapeutic method for dealing with mental disturbances. He considered dreams as extra information that the patient was unable to convey to the analyst during the waking state. Dream Psychology, first published in 1921, and translated by MD Eder, is a definitive work which changed the climate of treatments and handling of different neuroses and dysfunctional people. The book is divided into nine chapters. In many of them, Freud uses his own dreams as subjects for interpretation, while in others, he uses his patients’ dreams to elucidate his theories of psychoanalysis. While some of the theories may no longer be relevant or valid in today’s world, this book is indeed one of the foundation stones of Freudian psychoanalysis and marked a water-shed in the attitude towards dreams. He refuted the purely medical and purely spiritual interpretations that had been prevalent till then and proposed a completely new theory. Some of the most interesting parts of the book deal with symbols and language in dreams. Freud developed a standard system of symbols and their actual meaning based on his studies and used it to interpret and decode what his patient was really thinking and conveying. Many of the dreams he recounts were analyzed in the context of Victorian attitudes towards sexuality, repressed desires and unfulfilled wishes. By analyzing and understanding these dreams, Freud’s patients were able to get a better understanding of their underlying, unexpressed motives and this set them on the path to healing. We spend nearly one third of our lives sleeping and during some of that time we dream. Some dreams are vivid enough to be remembered, others are forgotten the moment we wake. This book is an interesting and thought-provoking read that appeals to both people interested in psychology and the casual reader. More great books at LoyalBooks.com

    Self Portraits As Other People

    Self Portraits As Other People

    by

    Since Jul 23, 2019 19:00 UTC

Self Portraits as Other People is a hyper-creative, psycho-active variety show wherein multidimensional artist, filmmaker, voice-actor, and wordsmyth The Ungoogleable Michaelangelo engages his guests in social storytelling to mindfully and artfully investigate where the limits of language meet the fringes of Reality. The show intrepidly treads the terrain of the trickster, constantly defying, redefining, and refining itself. Each episode is its own schizovereign entity, but there are themes that are built upon from pod to pod–themes like Consciousness and the Bicameral Mind, Divination, Daemonic reality, Magic, Language, Psychedelics, Creativity, Dreams, Art, Poetry, Cinema, Ecology, literature, Animism, Precognition, Shamanism, and so on. Each episode is preceded by an intricately sound-scaped introduction that offers the invisible listener a lens through which to view the conversation that is to follow, along with otherwise cosmic, comedic, and contemplative content. The shownotes offer hyperlinked rabbitholes that will allow you to dig deeper into wonderlands touched upon on air. Occasionally a solo pod is bath-bombed into the stream to showcase stand-alone story fragments that have escaped from the dark archives of never before released materials, or from the vaults of “Patreon-only”. Right from the start, SPAOP wasted no time jumping off the deep end into the highlands, linguistically levitating somewhere between the fatherland and the mothership, where laughing angels drink from the crying well and the cosmic giggle reflects its cracked smile on the surface of the shattered mirror-pool. If you’re new here, and are wondering where to start, you are invited to listen in any order. Start at the last episode for the most cutting edge, newest now, and track back from there to witness the devolution, or start at the beginning and work your way up to the present, or pick a pod with a title & description that piques your curiosity. The choice is yours. We’d love to hear from you, so don’t hesitate to reach out, and/or leave a review. www.theungoogleable.com
