SKRAPS is your podcast where we, on your behalf explore the stories of sparks of scientific brilliance in science and innovation. SKRAPS is the word sparks spelt backwards and also a play on the idea that ideas are written on back of a napkin or scraps of paper. We explore stories of people in science, while elaborating on the scientific details so that experts and non-experts can relate to science better in today’s whimsical world that acts to spread mis-information.

    The HeavenField – Book Three

    The HeavenField – Book Three

    by

    Since Aug 1, 2011 11:06 UTC

The THIRD of Four parts in the HeavenField story. Welcome to The HeavenField – a place of dreams and nightmares that waits upon the edge of reality. Nations, clandestine Government Agencies and Supernatural horrors, all these fight for supremacy, and the fate of the world hangs in the balance. Welcome to The HeavenField. The Battle has Begun… The third installment of The HeavenField Novel – a fast-paced science-fiction thriller set within a British experimental Scientific Researcher Facility. Alex finds himself incarcerated by his former allies, unable to intervene as they slide inexorably towards a war for control of the HeavenField. He is lost in a personal struggle to resist the terrifying effects of his exposure to the Field, and a descent into madness. Back at the Maunsworth Research Facility, Grace Palmer and Thomas Sullivan must try and save the Project as it comes under attack from both within their trusted team, and from the HeavenField itself. After the attempts to destroy the HeavenField project have ended in disaster, the protaganists must regroup and prepare for the final battle to come… “The others tell me that I waste my time on my visits to you Alexi,” said Henschel, from his seat at the table in Alex’s cell. Henschel’s eyes darted around the room once more. Alex had noticed the old man was exhibiting more and more signs of madness. “They say you are too great a risk, and that I should simply kill you,” He smiled, trying to gauge Alex’s reaction. “And is that what you intend to do?” asked Alex morosely. The visits from Henschel were becoming ever more alarming, and Alex didn’t expect to survive much longer. Perhaps this would prove to be the moment. “Oh, I can’t do that,” Henschel giggled, with a wild light in his eye. “You are much too powerful Alexi, don’t taunt me. But you are a risk. You must try to fight the enemy within yourself, to come back to us!”

The mission to New Ontario, is not going as planned. The first landing ends in disaster when the American astronaut, Scott Anderson, goes down alone and dissappears. Captain Sally Buds, Ian Merryfield, Vladamir Coronov must put aside their personal differences and attempt an umarmed rescue unsure of what awaits them below. On the surface, they find only the remnants of a civilization. Buildings are rotting and the remains of human-like bodies are scattered around what may once have been streets. But the rescue trail leads them to a Nazi-style concentration camp populated with crowds of human cattle living in squalor. The camp has no walls or barbed wire, but no one is trying to escape. In fact, the workers are smiling. There among them is Scott Anderson. To rescue him, they must face an unspeakably cruel regime with no concept of mercy. But this turns out to be only the beginning. The Masters have discovered vital information about Earth, its technology, and location. Will the same madness that consumed New Ontario ultimately engulf Earth? Sally and Ian must risk their lives to prevent it.

Anarchism and Other Essays by Emma Goldman

Anarchism and Other Essays by Emma Goldman

    by

    Since Oct 14, 2020 00:00 UTC

Chicago, May 4, 1886. In the Haymarket region of the city, a peaceful Labor Day demonstration suddenly turns into a riot. The police intervene to maintain peace, but they soon use violence to quell the mob and a bomb is thrown, resulting in death and injuries to scores of people. In the widely publicized trial that followed, eight anarchists were condemned to death or life imprisonment, convicted of conspiracy, though none of them had actually thrown the bomb. A young Russian immigrant, Emma Goldman, had arrived just the previous year in the United States. She was deeply affected by what came to be known as the Haymarket Affair. She took on various jobs, including that of a factory worker before becoming a writer and lecturer committed to anarchist philosophy. In the years to follow, she and her lover planned to assassinate a well known financier and industrialist. Though the victim survived, Goldman’s lover was sentenced to life imprisonment while she received a lesser sentence. However, she continued to spend time in and out of jail for various activities including distribution of literature regarding birth control, inducing people not to join the newly introduced military draft etc. She was deported back to Russia but found the regime there highly repressive and lived in Canada, England and France. She wrote passionately about issues that concerned humanity including prisons, religion, marriage, free love, the right of choice, capitalism, homosexuality, gender politics and militarism. Anarchism and Other Essays was first published by her own publishing house, Mother Earth. It opens with an introduction by Hippolyte Havel, a Czech anarchist who lived in Greenwich Village in New York. He was a great friend of the playwright, Eugene O’Neill, who based some of the characters in his plays on Havel. Havel provides a detailed biography of Emma Goldman and ends with a stirring call to emancipate humanity. Emma Goldman’s preface describes her own journey and motives. Twelve chapters delineate Goldman’s philosophy and ideas. They include thoughts on Minorities versus Majorities, Prisons: A Social Crime and Failure, The Hypocrisy of Puritanism, Marriage and Love, The Tragedy of Women’s Emancipation and several more. Living in an age marked by the rise of unbridled capitalism, self righteousness, imperialism and greed, in these essays she writes simply, passionately, earnestly and penetratingly about ideas and ideals and how individuals are constantly in conflict with society. Goldman wrote ceaselessly; her works include pamphlets, essays, books and tracts. As an interesting and radical viewpoint, Anarchism and Other Essays is a thought provoking read which was also strangely prophetic about the future of politics to come. Brobdingnagian Bards Podcast

    by

    Since Jun 30, 2005 20:06 UTC

Scottish and Irish folk songs combined with the Lord of the Rings music and a wee bit o’Celtic fun. The Brobdingnagian Bards (pronounced brob-din-nahg-EE-en) were The Original Celtic Renaissance music duo from Austin, Texas. Their unique brand of folk music on the autoharp, recorder, and mandolin made them one of the most-popular Celtic music groups online where they continue to give away thousands of free Celtic MP3 downloads daily.

From 1999 to 2008, the Brobdingnagian Bards performed coast-to-coast, and in a given month could be found at a Lord of the Rings Oscar Party, a Celtic festival, or a Science Fiction Convention. However, they were an absolute favorite at Renaissance Faires where they added high-energy and wit to make every show a memorable experience.

Thanks in part to this podcast, their shows are never done!
