2011 is the 300th anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest figures in Western Philosophy – David Hume. As well as an economist and historian, Hume was specifically known for his scepticism and empiricism, and was also an important figure in the Scottish Enlightenment period in the 18th century. In this audio collection, The Open University’s Nigel Warburton is joined by A.C. Grayling and other philosophers to discuss Hume’s key theories around the self, induction and his argument against miracles. A good entry point into philosophy and the work of David Hume. This material forms part of The Open University course A222 Exploring philosophy.

Thought Works is a podcast about random thoughts of two seasoned healthcare professionals. These thoughts center around what makes each one of us different, yet similar. From fears and our worrying/panicking of the next change in our normal life to satisfaction and our tastes in food or music. This is not some dry stuffy recording of a human parts list. It is a compared and contrasted approach between Eddie and Darren. Now they have similarities and differences themselves. But an important similarity, is the never ending curiosity and drive to understand. Darren is lead by the “dead cat gene” of curiosity and wanting all to understand. Eddie is passionate about people not missing out or suffering from a lack of openness to try something new. Listen along to be engaged, informed, or just entertained.

Have you ever considered what being conscious actually means? By choosing to live in a particular state are you consenting to be subject to all its laws? For some there’s an assumption that philosophy might not be relevant to modern life but Dr. Nigel Warburton, senior lecturer in Philosophy at The Open University argues that many of us today are faced with philosophical questions such as these as we live our lives in the twenty first century. In this collection we ask academics to discuss these questions in addition to other important philosophical issues and concepts such as the morality of abortions and the reconciling a world with evil and a good God. This material forms part of The Open University course A222 Exploring philosophy.
