AAWW Radio: New Asian American Writers & Literature

AAWW Radio: New Asian American Writers & Literature

    by

    Since Oct 17, 2017 22:09 UTC

AAWW Radio is the podcast of the Asian American Writers’ Workshop, an NYC literary arts space at the intersection of migration, race, and social justice. Listen to AAWW Radio and you’ll hear selected audio from our current and past events, as well as occasional original episodes. We’ve hosted established writers like Claudia Rankine, Maxine Hong Kingston, Roxane Gay, Amitav Ghosh, Ocean Vuong, Solmaz Sharif, and Jenny Zhang. Our events are intimate and intellectual, quirky yet curated, and dedicated to social justice. We curate our events to juxtapose novelists and activists, poets and intellectuals, and bring together people who usually wouldn’t be in the same room. We’ve got it all: from avant-garde poetry to post-colonial politics, feminist comics to lyric verse, literary fiction to dispatches from the left. A sanctuary for the immigrant imagination, we believe Asian American stories deserve to be told. Learn more by visiting aaww.org Produced by the Asian American Writers’ Workshop.

What do you need to add? What do you need to cut? Most importantly each episode will challenge you to make the hard edits to your story! See you inside.

David Simkins and Marc Zicree work in television. They realized one day they knew some interesting people so they cajoled them into talking into microphones. Listen in. Hear how TV really works. And doesn’t. Deric Hughes and Ben Raab are writers for Syfy’s WAREHOUSE 13. Hailing from the world of comics and new media, they were obvious hires for season one and easily made the cut for season two. In this fast half-hour they discuss their start in the business and the experience of working on a hit show. […]

Casting Pods Lesbian Mother Writing Knitting Life

Casting Pods Lesbian Mother Writing Knitting Life

    by

    Since Oct 28, 2010 17:58 UTC

Lesbian mother, writer and internet geek, Josie Henley-Einion talks about life, the universe and everything. An audio blog which leads to a publishing contract. Some of the episodes have explicit content. Note, although I have added ‘knitting’ to the title of the podcast, I have only been talking about knitting since around episode 18, although I’ve been knitting since I was tiny. So if you’re looking particularly for knitting content, no need to listen to the archive, but if you want some interesting and literary content to listen to *while* you’re knitting then go ahead and download the archive! Just a message about the transfer to libsyn and the new episode in the new feed.

    Unconventional

    Unconventional

    by

    Since Jun 20, 2009 04:59 UTC

YOUNG JAMES FROST just knows, deep in his bones, that he’s a writer. He writes far into early mornings, after his wearying hours of scrubbing toilets and sweeping floors. He loves writing that much. But it’s not only the joy of words that keeps him grinding; it’s his desire to retire the janitor’s mop. He sees being published as the key to living an improved life. James has another deep-seated conviction: that he’s not good enough. He secretly longs to be accepted. However, the conventional others in his life seem all too willing to remind him that he’s wasting his time. Then he meets and falls in love with Leigh, the one bright spot in his endless misery of self-doubt. A quiet but resolutely religious girl, she has to fight off disapproval of her own from overly critical parents, whose insults are countered by James’s often-voiced admiration of her. Likewise, Leigh’s faith in his talents begins to build his confidence, eventually allowing her to introduce him to a different way to help himself: relying on God. Ultimately, James’s newfound faith is sorely tested to the point of doubt when his dream to be published seems to melt into a mirage, smothered by countless rejection slips from agents and publishers. His faith is also battered by having to fight highly emotional battles and suffer fear and loss. Just when James appears hopelessly sapped by devastating events, one last door opens, and he’s rocked by an epiphany. UNCONVENTIONAL is designed to inspire readers to reach for their dreams. Buy this book. Read it. Share it with everyone you know. You—and they—will be glad you did! * * * * * * Jeffrey Kafer, winner of the 2008 Voicey Awards (in the category of Best New Voice), is the narrator of Unconventional. An A+ novel for the keeper shelf.” –Gemma Halliday, award-winning author “I loved Unconventional, a stirring love story and spiritual journey that will surely touch your heart. You’ll remember James Frost for a long time!” –Cecelia Dowdy, inspirational romance novelist * * * * * * To learn about J. J. Hello! You might’ve ended up here because you’re familiar with my Netflix stand-up specials “Lower Classy” or “Middle Classy.” Maybe you were a fan of my sitcom “Cristela” or you saw “Cars 3” and thought, “I NEED to follow this yellow car!” Look, let’s be real. For all I know, you’re here because we used to date or we went to school together and you wanted to see what I was up to before you went asleep (we’ve all been there). To Be Continued is my podcast that mixes sketch, social commentary and well, really whatever comes to my mind. That’s part of the fun. It’s a conversation I have with you that never ends…thus the title: To Be Continued.
