WVMR hit the airwaves on July 9th, 1981 as a lone AM community station in the National Radio Quiet Zone. 40 years later, Allegheny Mountain Radio has grown into a network that spans Pocahontas (WV), Highland, and Bath (VA) counties – straddling the West Virginia-Virginia Border and continues to provide hyper-local news and music programming to the Allegheny Highlands. Unique By Nature is a limited podcast series which explores the establishment and development of Allegheny Mountain Radio. While our goal is to celebrate the history of our station, we are also hoping to ask (and maybe answer) some big questions about the nature of community media. Unique By Nature is produced by Allegheny Mountain Radio

Believe it or not, an AM radio station in Northfield was foolish enough to give members of the Northfield Union of Youth (also known as The Key) a radio show every Saturday. Originally broadcasting at the god-awful time of 9:00 a.m, they have since been on at the slightly more manageable time of 11:00 a.m. The show, broadcasting live every Saturday on 1080 AM KYMN Radio in Northfield, is NOW MOVING to the station’s very own podcasting site. So please make sure you look for the most recent shows here: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=317913830 [itunes pic]
First and foremost, let us apologize for the lack of episodes through August. On the 8th, there was a problem recording the show, on the 15th, only Kev-E-Fly showed up and he only did half of a show (long story), the whole cast took the 22nd off, and now finally that brings us to the 29th of August. Secondly, we are moving to a new podcasting site very soon. 1080AM KYMN Radio (the station we broadcast on) has very graciously offered to have our show on their station’s podcast, rather than what we have been doing– podcasting off of a different service. This will more than likely start with the episode on September 5th, and you can find the station’s podcast here: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=317913830 Thirdly, here’s what happened “in this episode” of the show: Dan The Man, Kev-E-Fly and Antsy Adams talk about Bob Dylan lurking in front of homes in New Jersey, getting a free scorpion with your meal at McDonald’s, iPhones exploding in France, and Adam and Dan learn to drop their vowels when speaking. We also play brand new music from The Twilight Sad and Volcano Choir, as well as tunes from the Smashing Pumpkins, Bat For Lashes and Friendly Fires.

Talking Biotech is a weekly podcast that uncovers the stories, ideas and research of people at the frontier of biology and engineering. Each episode explores how science and technology will transform agriculture, protect the environment, and feed 10 billion people by 2050. Interviews are led by Dr. Kevin Folta, a professor of molecular biology and genomics.
The foundation of many modern consumer products begins with petroleum. Fossil fuels contain the building blocks of higher-complexity polymers, and are used in the creation of everything from high performance plastics in medical devices to your computer screen. But using petroleum use is not sustainable and has impacts in climate and pollution. What if the same molecular polymer backbones could be produced using biological organisms? Dr. Scott Franklin from Checkerspot explains how microalgae are being used to manufacture the fundamental building blocks of high performance polymers in a system that creates zero waste. These chemical backbones are used to create high-performance polymers that are fashioned into sporting goods for consumers interested in sustainability.

The Building Our Own Tables podcast supports leaders along their journeys of creation for our collective liberation. Knowing we are all one. Healing. Transforming. Medicine for those who are building our own, creating our own spaces that are healing, decolonizing, and leading from love. The experience is a combination of words, music, poetry, body-breath practices, meditations and visualizations, folks sharing their specific stories, science, history, and rituals. We center voices of the global majority Black, Brown, African, Indigenous, Native, Asian, Arab, Middle Eastern, Mestiza and Dual or Multi-Race creators as a solidarity and honoring of our unique cultural wisdoms as we work to build racial, social and climate justice worldwide. This podcast stems from Yura Sapi’s experience as a multi-disciplinary creator and facilitator of initiatives, collectives, practices and organizations expanding beyond borders. Years ago, they were hearing about efforts for marginalized folks to “get a seat at the table” in decision making at arts organizations in the United States and decided they would rather build their own table. Knowing they were not alone, they looked to the community building and oral history recording of the podcast medium, and with the support of HowlRound, the Building Our Own Tables Podcast was born. Your donation to Advancing Arts Forward supports liberated spaces, like this one, that uplift, heal and encourage us to change the world.
