    Darash Chai – Seek Life!

    Darash Chai – Seek Life!

    by

    Since Mar 20, 2019 11:00 UTC

In the beginning there were two trees in the Garden of Eden. One, a tree that brought life. The other, a tree that brought death. The serpent showed up and placed the focus of mankind on the tree that brought death. Is it possible that we as a race have been focusing on the wrong tree. We talk about good and evil, right and wrong. We discuss what is moral and what is immoral. All of these questions, however, were on the tree that brought death. Perhaps it is time to shift our focus. To stop looking to the tree of death by asking the question of good and evil. Rather, let’s start asking the question of life and death. If we can shift our assumptions on this most basic of questions, we can change our entire paradigm. If we change our paradigm, we can change the world. What will be the result? I do not know, but you are invited to come along and join us as we Seek Life.

Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions

Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions

    by

    Since May 3, 2009 07:38 UTC

Math. Geometry. Physics. Violence? Is this the same book I read in school? Yep. One of the joys of rediscovering old books is that they still have the ability to surprise, even shock. “If my poor Flatland friend retained the vigour of mind which he enjoyed when he began to compose these Memoirs, I should not now need to represent him in this preface, in which he desires, fully, to return his thanks to his readers and critics in Spaceland … But he is not the Square he once was. Years of imprisonment, and the still heavier burden of general incredulity and mockery, have combined with the thoughts and notions, and much also of the terminology, which he acquired during his short stay in Spaceland. …” You may remember Flatland as a clever children’s story about squares and triangles and such living a happy life in a sheet of paper, a story about math and geometry and such. No, not so much. Sure, there’s no Adult Language or Sex. But there’s plenty of violence. I recall recording one scene wherein over 120,000 people were stabbed to death, torn to pieces and eaten by their fellow Flatlanders. Yes. Way. Assuming you consider Isoceles Triangles people. In Flatland, they are. Mostly. “Imagine a vast sheet of paper on which straight Lines, Triangles, Squares, Pentagons, Hexagons, and other figures, instead of remaining fixed in their places, move freely about, on or in the surface, but without the power of rising above or sinking below it, very much like shadows–only hard with luminous edges–and you will then have a pretty correct notion of my country and countrymen. Alas, a few years ago, I should have said ‘my universe,’ but now my mind has been opened to higher views of things. …” Flatland is very old Hard Science Fiction, if you look at it right. It’s clever, satirical, funny and sad. It includes well-fleshed-out alien society with similarities to our own, several different alternate universes, genetics, politics, religion, slavery, tyranny, war, rebellion, imprisonment, madness, and death. And math. And geometry. And some rather clever Puns. “Written by A. Square?” Also known as Edwin Abbott Abbott. Get it? As if the Brothers Grimm had gotten much, much Grimmer. “To The Inhabitance of SPACE IN GENERAL, And H.C. IN PARTICULAR, This Work is Dedicated By a Humble Native of Flatland, In the Hope that Even as he was Initiated into the Mysteries Of THREE DIMENSIONS, Having been previously conversant With ONLY TWO, So the Citizens of that Celestial Region May aspire yet higher and higher, To the Secrets of FOUR, FIVE, or EVEN SIX Dimensions, Thereby contributing To the Enlargment of THE IMAGINATION, And the possible Development Of that most and excellent Gift of MODESTY, Among the Superior Races Of SOLID HUMANITY.” Bring a pencil. And use your imagination. I dare you.

    Peter 2.0

    Peter 2.0

    by

    Since Aug 26, 2020 11:00 UTC

Peter Scott-Morgan intends to defy his fatal diagnosis and live on as a cyborg.

Peter is extraordinary. A robotics scientist, an acclaimed business process expert and an accomplished author. Peter and his partner, Francis, were also the first same-sex couple to be legally married in the UK.

In 2017, Peter discovered he had a Motor Neurone Disease (MND). From the very start, he saw this terminal diagnosis as an opportunity to put his fascination with robotics and science fiction into practice and become the world’s first human cyborg.

This three-part podcast documents Peter’s curious journey, which could have profound implications for many people who suffer from conditions like MND. It opens up that big question: What does it mean to be human if you can continuously improve your ‘quality of life’?

Peter has a looming problem. “It’s like trying to build a lifeboat after the ship has already started sinking.” The increasingly debilitating effects of his diagnosis are closing in on his ambition. He encounters restrictive attitudes towards his new disability and the challenge of recruiting some of the world’s greatest minds, including IBM and Microsoft, to engage with his very personal problem. “We have to pull a number of rabbits out of a hat.”

What keeps Peter going is surprising. Living as a gay man, for forty years, has prepared him for this pioneering mission, despite the scepticism and prejudice he will encounter. “What makes you a man is what’s up here” Peter remarks as he raises a feeble hand to head height.

Peter 2.0 was created by sifting through over 100 hours of footage from a Channel 4 documentary, Peter The Human Guinea. The podcast reached the Top Ten in Apple Podcast’s Science list, was selected for the coveted New and Noteworthy recommendation and was shortlisted for a Rose D’or and won silver for Smartest Podcast at British Podcast Awards in 2021.

In the first three episodes, we’ll explain Peter’s journey to his ground-breaking transformation. The rest of the season follows Peter adapting to his new life as a cyborg.
