    Going for Broke

    Going for Broke

    by

    Since Oct 18, 2021 09:00 UTC

Going for Broke is a co-production of the Economic Hardship Reporting Project and PRX’s “To The Best of Our Knowledge” at Wisconsin Public Radio. The three-part series hosted by broadcaster Ray Suarez centers on Americans who have lived on the edge. They share their sometimes startling economic experiences and also insight into our society as a whole. Each hour also includes some of our country’s top thinkers on income inequality, among them the legendary writer Barbara Ehrenreich, author of the classic “Nickel and Dimed,” who passed away in September 2022. In each episode we ask: what would result if we put more care into how we dealt with housing or mental health crises or our workplaces? Going for Broke explores these questions, moving from powerful personal accounts to visionary solutions.

Reggie And Royal Perspectives, on Economy, History, Cryptocurrency, Business Podcast

Reggie And Royal Perspectives, on Economy, History, Cryptocurrency, Business Podcast

    by

    Since Aug 6, 2021 04:28 UTC

Old School Meets New School! Somewhat recently, the Oracle of Omaha Warren Buffett was forced to finally admit that he was not well-connected to the tech boom to fully profit from that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He just didn’t get it. Many of the discussions relative to current day economics, business, history, cryptocurrency are quite often constrained by the perspectives of the participants. Younger participants are more attuned to the world into which they have grown and are now currently immersed, giving them a valuable basis to relate to those in the generations of those coming behind us. However, without the benefit of living history, and, the historical perspectives that might be missed by that younger generation, this forward view alone clearly misses the boat. Quite often the wisdom of eyes on events long gone must be weaved in to either emphasize, balance, or, at times, dismiss that view entirely. And, vice versa. This father and son pair are using their own personal understandings, successes, failures, and, understandings, both mutual and distinctively different, to impart their spin on the news and events of the day. Many elements flowing through our media streams each and every day are leaving a few loose ends that require a bit of further understanding and crucial context. Join us as we explore many of the topics of the day from both ends of our generational spectrums. Your Body, Your Brand

    Your Body, Your Brand

    by

    Since Aug 9, 2019 15:53 UTC

    Women are dropping out.

They’re dropping out of the workplace to become yoga teachers. Leaving behind careers to sell essential oils and fitness programs. Opting out of STEM to focus on their Paleo diet cookbook.

And even when they stay in, they’re spending their lunch hours talking about their latest diet, getting up from their desks to do burpees or add a few more steps to their FitBit, waking up early or staying out late to beat their bodies into submission at hot yoga or Crossfit. They’re giving the money they earn to the women who have dropped out.

    We’re making dangerous investments.

We’re bought into the idea that health and fitness is where the money is, and if we could just spend or make a few more dollars and hit the next PR, all of our problems will be solved, we’ll improve our relationships, and finally stop hating our bodies. But though the Internet seems bullish on optimizing your health, no one ever talks about the real reason we’re feeling so bad in the skin we’re in: money.

And it’s time that we had a conversation about it. In our increasingly branded and visual online world, we need to talk about how capital —both social and financial — affects the ways in which we hold onto damaging beliefs about our body image, fitness, and nutrition.

    And getting rewarded for disorder.

The things we invest in often control us. This podcast isn’t about eating disorders, though it does touch on how we’re buying and selling disordered eating, fitness, and body image. But really, it’s about the pervasiveness of brand, the difficulty of selling something authentically, and the sad fact that it’s easier to sell something you can control (your body) than trying to control corporate America.

This podcast will introduce you to marketing psychology and behavioral economics and tell the story of how we gave up our sense of embodiment, empowerment, and participation in the workforce in exchange for a few “likes” and the veneer of a “healthy” personal brand.

The Your Body, Your Brand podcast brings experts in sales, marketing, branding, feminism, and coaching into conversation with coaches, entrepreneurs, and diet consumers to ask:

    – Why do women keep dropping out of the workforce to sell diet/fitness/body image coaching?
    – Why do people keep getting invested in following “solopreneurs” with fitness/diet/body image brands?
    – Is becoming a brand based on your body ever a good thing?
